FAQ: What cable is used to power 120v motors? | Soleffect

For high-torque applications and large-scale architectural openings, 120V AC motors provide the necessary lifting capacity and constant power. Proper electrical rough-in is essential to ensure these motors operate safely and interface correctly with the building’s power supply.

Standard Power Specifications

All 120V RTS (Radio Technology Somfy®) motors from Somfy utilize a specific cable type designed for durability and standardized electrical connection:

  • Cable Type: SJTW 3-conductor cable.
  • Configuration: This cable includes three distinct wires—Hot, Neutral, and Ground—to ensure a safe, grounded connection for the motor housing.
  • Durability: The “SJTW” designation indicates a hard-service, thermoplastic-insulated jacket that is water-resistant and suitable for both indoor and specialized outdoor architectural applications.

Installation & Electrical Prep

Because these motors operate on high-voltage line power, they generally require a licensed electrician for installation. The SJTW cable allows for:

  • Direct Hardwiring: The cable can be routed into an electrical junction box for a clean, hidden finish.
  • Plug-in Options: In some configurations, a grounded 3-prong plug can be attached for use with standard outlets, though hardwiring is preferred for architectural integration.

Note: Always refer to the specific Somfy motor data sheet for amperage draw and circuit loading requirements. For wiring diagrams or motor-specific lead lengths, please contact your Soleffect sales representative.
